The Journal of Runark, Day 6

Today was eventful.

Woke up in the speaker’s castle. Met with Huarwar and found out that he didn’t want to return home. Grav tried to tell him otherwise but it was no good. Huarwar was intent on sticking with the Knights of the Black Sword after they took him in. The cult had likely indoctrinated the young man. The only answer now was to fight.

Met with Kadroth in the speaker’s office. Grav gave him one last chance to leave but the leader refused. Violence broke out between us and the guards. Kadroth escaped through a secret tunnel leading outside but we followed. When we made it through, he had sounded the alarm and the Knights of the Black Sword were ready to fight.

During the battle, Grav and Thana were separated from us. They pushed through while I stayed in the back with my bow, relying on Orson to protect me. Keeneye wanted to catch up with the others but had to fight his way through several cultists. The enemy finally surrendered when Grav and Thana killed Kadroth in battle.

The good news was that we finally saved the speaker and his staff. Crannoc Siever is an abrasive man but is on our side.. He thanked us for rescuing him and offered his home to us whenever our travels took us to Caer-Dineval. I don’t intend to take him up on the offer. I prefer a warm tavern to a castle anyday.

The bad news is that the surviving Knights of the Black Sword left, taking Huarwar with them. A tiefling woman named Avarice took them. Unlike Kadroth, whose skin was red, Avarice had pale skin that was not normal for a typical tiefling. She was a powerful wizard so we decided it was in our best interest not to stop her. I fear that we are only delaying the confrontation with her.

The day was still young. Keegan’s husband, Garret, was still missing, and Boy was anxious to find him. It was a short trip to Caer-Konig, where we had a short meeting with the speaker. Trovus told us of thieves from the town. We agreed to look into the matter after we were done at Kelvin’s Cairn.

We left for Kelvin’s Cairn where Garret was last seen. An avalanche hindered us by burying Grav and Keeneye. Thana helped dig Grav out. I dug Keeneye out. We found Garret, who was still alive. Although cold and injured, he was insistent on finding the rest of his companions. He even fought with us when crag cats ambushed us. The beasts were dispatched quickly.

I was disappointed to find out that Garret and his team didn’t find Oyaminartok. That reunion will have to wait for another day.

There was only one survivor of Garret’s team. The rest had frozen to death or were left to the beasts of Kelvin Cairn. A halfling member of the team survived but was taken in by a yeti tyke. The child was watched by one of its parents. We were forced to kill the adult yeti in self defense. I offered the tyke a beast from my bag for it to eat, allowing us to take the halfling in peace.

The tyke’s other parent showed up and blocked the way out of the cave. It was angry that we had killed its mate and stood between it and its child. We were exhausted from our battle and the climb. I did not intend to leave a child without its parents. I know what growing up like that can do. I went back to the cave, took up the tyke, and offered it to its parent. The yeti let us leave in peace and we returned to Caer-Konig.

Garret took Boy with him and said he could make it back to Targos. We would find out soon enough if he survived as we needed to meet with Keegan for our reward. We followed Trovus’ instructions to the Northlook, a tavern where the lantern was stolen. The sisters that owned the inn told us where the tracks of the thieves led to. My companions agreed to rest for the night before we started the hunt for the criminals.
